Tag: Gideon

Tag, you’re it!

PREPARATION

I think sometimes God plays tag with His believers. You know, “Tag, you’re it.” And, His tag always seems to push us beyond our expectations. But, when he tags you, prepared or not, you become “that” guy, “that” gal. You’re it!

It was a difficult and terror filled time for the Israelites. They were living in squalor, hiding in the caves, scattered in the hills. They had lost the gift and forgotten the giver. Now the Midianites called the shots, and there was no hero, no inspiration to rally people against them.

Then God stepped into history and tagged one man, an ordinary, unheroic, everyday guy. And when God tags you, well….

The angel got Gideon’s attention, but it God who put the tag on him. The voice was clear and there wasn’t much beating around the bush. The angel said, “Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!”

“Sir,” Gideon replied, “if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all the miracles our ancestors told us about? Didn’t they say, The Lord brought us up out of Egypt? But now the Lord has abandoned us and handed us over to the Midianites.”

Like Gideon, you may feel unwilling or unable. It doesn’t matter; God’s tag changes everything. The angel responded, “Go with the strength you have, and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you!”

“But Lord,” Gideon replied, “how can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest in the whole tribe of Manasseh, and I am the least in my entire family!”

The Lord said to him, “I will be with you. And you will destroy the Midianites as if you were fighting against one man.” The angel said, “The Lord is with you mighty warrior.” (Judges 6 NLT)

Gideon, tag, you’re it.

The Holy Book is filled with the stories of God’s encounters with ordinary men and women, people He tagged to be “that guy” and “that gal.” Sometimes He tags them right in the middle of their grumbling and bellyaching, but He tags them anyway.

One thing is crystal clear: when God tags you, you’re it. It’s time to take action, to be what God has called you to be. It’s time to be the story.

What does He want you to do? You don’t have to have a training course or special certificate, to be “that guy,” just trust God and take action. God’s tag came loaded with all the power you need.

INSPIRATION

What is “that guy” like?

There is a snippet of dialogue in the movie Live Free and Die Hard that grabbed my attention. As usual, John McClane (Bruce Willis) is in the wrong place at the wrong time and has to do his thing and save the world. John’s task is simple, get a young cyber-geek named Matt Farrell (Justin Long) and take him to the FBI. Of course, nothing is that simple.

After several close calls including a scene where McClane takes out a helicopter with a car, Matt confesses that he’s not like McClane, he’s not a hero type. McClane responds, “You know what you get for being a hero? Nothin’. You get shot at. You get a little pat on the back, blah, blah, blah, attaboy. You get divorced. Your wife can’t remember your last name. Your kids don’t want to talk to you. You get to eat a lot of meals by yourself. Trust me, kid, nobody wants to be that guy.”

Matt Asks, “Then why are you doing this?”

“Because,” McClane replies, “there’s no body else to do it right now, that’s why. Believe me, if there were somebody else to do it, I’d let them do it, but there’s not. So we’re doing it.”

“Ah. That’s what makes you that guy,” Matt says.

Then, near the end of the movie after all the bad guys are dead, McClane says to Matt, “Hey, thanks for saving my daughter’s life.”

Matt responds, “What was I going to do?”

McClane adds, “That’s what makes you that guy.”

Matt smiles, “Yeah.”

MOTIVATION

Go to a DO NOT DISTURB place, and pour out your complaints, your frustrations; tell God about your struggles, your failures, your fears, your worries. Be like Gideon, ask where God’s been! Take as much time as needed. Drain it empty.

Then sit in silence and listen. Listen for a calling, a task, a mission, a direction.

Listen for a quiet voice…”Tag you’re it, time to be that guy…that gal.”
