Jesus was here, but He is coming back

Inspiration and imagination remain

Herod's Sea Port at Caesarea

The Mediterranean Sea was a welcome sight. The cool breeze and pounding waves were relaxing and refreshing. We walked the shore and imagined majestic building pushing their way above the rocks and out into the sea.

Digging up stories of the past

After the seaside adventure, we walked to the top of Megiddo. It seems this poor town has been destroyed and rebuilt twenty times in the last 5,000 years. Now it’s a place with stories of life, but no real life.

Then, on the way to Tiberias we drove through the little town of Cana. This is the site of the “water to wine” miracle. If you blink, you will drive through the town without an inkling that something special happened here almost 2000 years ago.

By the way, jewish weddings in Jesus’ day were quiet different than what we have come to expect today. After the bridegroom and the bride-to-be’s father have come to an agreement about payment, the groom announces the engagement and he says something like this to his fiancee, “I am going away to prepare a place for you, it won’t be long, when I return I will take you there to be my wife.” Then she waits and prepares and he works on preparation.

Finally, when the young man has added a place for her to his fathers house and prepared it for his bride, he returns to her home, gets her and takes her to live with him. The wedding is announced and after the couple consummate’s their marriage, the 7-day party begins.

Does something about that sound familiar?

Just before his death, I remember Jesus saying, “In my Father’s house are many rooms, if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. And, if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”

We sat on Mt. Precipice, taking communion, and imagining the stories that linger in the valley below. God has blessed that place, but He’s not done yet. Jesus is coming back and He has prepare exactly what we have been looking for. God blesses people more than places.

Faith says, let the party begin.
